I have adopted a baby crow that was broght to my clinic by a well meaning man last Friday. It requires round the clock feeding so couldn't stay at the hospital. After reading up on crows I found out that it would have been if the man had left the crow alone because wild bird babies leave the nests as soon as they are able (even when they cannot fly yet). This seems odd until you think about the old addage "don't put all you eggs in one basket". The longer the babies are in the nest the more likely a predator will find them and in finding them will kill them all. As soon as possible the babies leave the nest and spread out away from each other. They also move around alot, always sleeping each night in a new hiding spot. Mom and Dad keep tabs on them and feed them. So, what looks like a baby bird in need is most likely being taken care of by it's parents and doing just fine. So don't pick it up unless you notice an obvious medical problem (broken wing, bleeding) or if it doesn't move for a few days. It should vacate where you found it within the first day.

So my baby was likely fine, but now it's with people and has already imprinted on me, so it'll have to be a lifelong pet. I researched captive bred crows released to the wild and it's a nearly 100% mortality rate because they just don't know what's dangerous and what's not, they tend to be attracked to people (who, not knowing their friendly when they swoop down to land on their heads, kill them), and they lack the strong family bond that wild crows develope between mated pairs, parents, and siblings. There's already a family that used to have a pet crow (theirs had a broken wing) who wants to take my little Corby in when he's grown. Because of the high mortality rate of "pet" crows that are given the freedom to fly I'm definately suggesting that they keep his wings clipped. Sounds cruel to do that to a wild bird, but his other alternatives are much bleaker.

Right now Corby is making the transition from nestling to fledgeling. He can't balance very well but he stretches his super long legs and flaps his wings. He is very friendly. He's bonded with my cats, another good reason to not let him have too much freedom when he's older. My cats are nicer to birds than most. I named him Corby after a crow in one of my favorite books (The Unlikey Ones) and I also found out where the author of that book likely got the name...Corby is short for Corbinian which is Greek for "crow". Interesting huh? I'm facsinated by things like that so don't mind me. :P

I recently rebought my domain name and transfered my site from the freebie site I was on back to here. I haven't gotten around to updating it much though because I've been focusing all my attention on making a site for my job (Arbor Pet Clinic). If you want to check it out you can www.meghanscastle.com/ArborPet Clinic Right now it's just for my employees to look at and hopefully my boss will like it and buy a domain to be it's new home. :) I was in the process of working on it when the server went down so the rxrefill page looks retarded. Hopefully the server will work again and I'll be able to fix it before anyone notices *crosses fingers*.

On a more personal note....I received a messege from a long lost high school friend of mine (Justin) on myspace the other day!!! And he lives right around the corner from me!!!! That's SOOOOO cool. I may seem overly excited to YOU but I haven't seen any of my old high school buddies in many many months, some I haven't seen for over a year. And my high school buddies are my only friends aside from Matt and my co-workers. I've also reconnected with my best friend from high school, Lindsay, and told her about Justin. I'm really looking forward to all of us hanging out sometime in the near future. :)

I have totally lapsed on my journal entries. I do this every time. lol. Well....to catch you up...Matt and I got back together for REAL a month ago. We got back together unofficially (meaning we stopped dating other people and started 'doing it') six months ago, but we weren't ready to make it REAL yet. Now we're together nad better than ever!!! I love him so much. :)

Other things happened too. lol. I got an AWESOME job as a veterinary technichian at a clinic that sees ALL animals (cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, rabbits, tigers, baboons....you get the idea). I LOVE it!!!! I'm currently designing a web site for the clinic so I'm going to get back to that. More later. :)
